Effective December 23rd, 2024, amendment NHI rules will impact those who plan to stay outside Taiwan.
Previously, individuals leaving Taiwan for over six months could suspend their NHI status and stop paying premiums until they returned. This will no longer be the case.
Here's what you need to know:
No NHI Suspension for Long-Term Absences
If you're planning to be out of Taiwan for six months or longer, you will no longer be able to suspend your NHI.
Short-Term Absences (Less Than 2 Years)
For absences shorter than two years, your NHI coverage will remain active. This means you'll need to pay all missed premiums upon your return.
Residency and NHI Coverage (Over 2 Years)
If you reside abroad for over two years, your household registration will be canceled, resulting in the automatic termination of your National Health Insurance (NHI) coverage. During this period, you are not required to pay for NHI. To reinstate your NHI coverage, you must:
Restore your household registration.
Upon returning to Taiwan, you will need to wait six months and then pay for six months of NHI coverage. During this waiting period, you will be responsible for all medical expenses.
These updates aim to ensure fair usage of Taiwan’s NHI system, especially for individuals who primarily reside outside the country. Currently, around 210K individuals are under suspended NHI status, including many expats and students studying abroad.
